WHAT IS MARSH MADNESS?

Marsh Madness is a celebration of the history, culture, cuisine, economy and ecology of Marshes, Estuaries and Littoral Zones everywhere.

These are the most nutrient dense and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. Experts estimate that we have lost up to 90% of these ecosystems already and that what remains is under extreme pressure from pollution, over development and climate change. As much of our food comes from or is dependent on these regions and adjacent ecosystems, the protection, preservation and restoration of them is of paramount importance. As cornerstones for recreation and tourism these habitats are also of enormous value.

GOALS

Celebrate the magical people, places & processes that are protecting, preserving and restoring our precious Marshes & Estuaries.

Every March we revisit best practices in science, food and culture for creating reverence for these habitats. We hope to bring new and deepen old awareness and appreciation for these ecosystems. We hope to inspire people to be stake holders in the health of these habitats by helping them to discover their value. We often do this through food because the marsh and estuary produce so much bounty in that category.

HISTORY

Created by Kevin Joseph in 2021, Marsh Madness is a project with a long fuse and a slow burn. We’ve done some cool events in Miami, Sarasota and Charleston. A few photos from the festivities below:

MISSION, MANTRA & METHOD

MISSION: Celebrate the history, culture, cuisine, economy & ecology of the marsh, estuary and littoral habitats.

MANTRA:We protect what we love!” - Jacques Cousteau

METHOD: Content, Events & Conversations

At first it was just an idea. It’s still not much more than that. Going forward we seek to light this candle and begin to create a global “Marsh Awareness Month”, for lack of a better description.

Our beautiful Marshes are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. 90% of them are gone or significantly compromised. Still, much of our food is dependent on their health and they are a priceless asset for recreation. We hope our events, content and conversations will, in the years ahead, encourage more and more people to find value in these eco-systems.
